How To Survive The Winter If You’re Homeless

In the United States, an estimated 553,742 people are homeless, according to The National Alliance to End Homelessness. Many of these people are forced to endure cold winter temperatures with little to no protection from the elements. So how do they survive? There are a number of ways that homeless people try to stay warm during the winter. Some will seek out shelters or warming centers that can offer a reprieve from the cold. Others will try to find abandoned buildings or cars to sleep in. And still others will huddle together in groups to share body heat. But no matter what method they use to try to stay warm, it is always a struggle. Homeless people are at a higher risk for hypothermia and frostbite, and many will succumb to the cold each winter. If you are homeless, or know someone who is, there are a few things you can do to help them survive the winter. First, try to find a shelter or warming center in your area. If there are no such facilities available, see if you can find an abandoned building or car to sleep in. And finally, huddle together with other homeless people to share body heat. By taking these steps, you can help someone survive the winter – and maybe even save a life.

Every year, approximately 700 people in the United States die as a result of the cold. As the temperature outside rises, many emergency shelters are not opened until it reaches 40, 35, 32, or even 13 degrees. Matty, a former traveler who now resides in Detroit, is a 34-year-old man.
